The CSRA FGC - which is an abbreviation of "Central Savannah River Area" and "Fighting Game Community" - is a local tournament hosting organization for a variety of different fighting games. We work to build and maintain connections within our local community, supplying a fun outlet for social gathering that caters to professional players, casual players, and everyone in between.
At the CSRA FGC, my role as a Community Leader is to help direct newcomers and provide information about our organization, while assisting in the servicing of existing members, both online and in person at tournaments. This could include helping newer members through the registration process, or working with other leaders to make sure that our community remains drama-free as a place for anyone to hang out, meet new people, and enjoy fighting games.
As a Tournament Organizer, I work with other organizers to set up and run local, in-person fighting game tournaments. This includes reaching out to potential venues, setting up registration pages, and handling advertising and promotional material for our events. Once an event has been set up, running them includes collecting entry fees from participants, calling out bracket matches and assigning players to stations, and paying out the winners once standings are determined.
All of this work is done as a volunteer - neither myself, nor any of the other leaders or organizers, make any profit from fostering this community. Contributing to such a project has taught me valuable lessons about what it means to be a part of a community, and how impactful giving back can be. People have come together to be a part of a greater circle as a result of the work myself and my team have done, and I want to take that even further by contributing to bigger projects with a bigger reach.
